This thesis was executed as a development work for the personnel of an early childhood education unit with the objective of creating a handbook on adults’ role in supporting the development of child’s self-regulation. The aim was to develop and support the personnel’s educational skills. Additionally, the students’ own learning process and the development of professional skills were objectives as well. The thesis was created in cooperation with the early childhood education unit of the city of Espoo. Early childhood education, self-regulation skills and their development, the importance of emotional skills in self-regulation as well as the role of an adult in supporting the development of a child's self-regulation skills were discussed in the theoretical framework of the thesis. In addition, the theoretical framework examined how an adult’s resources affect educational work. An online survey for the personnel of the early childhood unit was utilized in the planning and execution of the handbook. The online survey charted the personnel’s skills and resources concerning their role in supporting the development of a child’s self-regulation skills. The purpose of the survey was to involve the personnel as well as to obtain information on their expectations for the handbook. The handbook includes information about self-regulation skills, emotional skills, the role of an adult in supporting the development of a child’s selfregulation skills, as well as the importance of an adult’s resources in educational work. In addition, the handbook includes methods to support the development of a child’s self-regulation skills. Feedback from the early childhood education unit, collected through an online survey, was utilized to assess the objectives.
